Day 4 activity 2 - Playing games SLJ

Kia ora and welcome back to my blog!

In this activity I have to choose a maori game that I liked and explain what the name of the game is, the goal or purpose of the game and two rules. Well one game that I chose wasn't actually from the list from this activity but you guys should know it. Its called pukana.

Pukana is a game where people have to keep the rhythm going but if you muck it up, then your out. Here's how you play the game.

The game starts with the caller that says "Te nei te kemu, pukana, pukana, rai ti". After the caller says that, He/she will choose a way and say PUKANA to the person beside them. And make sure your keeping the rhythm going. If you want to choose someone different from opposite you, you say "Aue" then the person you chose says "he" and carries on with the word "PUKANA".

There is also another way of saying the caller's bit which is "He toru karanga mata huriana", then you reply with "Hi, hi, hi ha". Then the caller says "wai wai takahia", then you reply with "Hi, hi, hi ha". The the caller says "show me a pukana", then you all show a pukana". After that the caller says "pukana hi, pukana ha, pukana, pukana, pukana, PUKANA and pass it on while you say the last pukana.

Here's an example:

"He toru karanga mata huriana, hi hi hi ha. Wai wai takahia, hi hi hi ha. Show me a pukana(show your pukana), pukana hi, pukana ha, pukana, pukana, pukana, PUKANA!

My favourite thing about this game is that you get to verse people that are next to you, it's so funny and amazing.

If you don't understand then here's a video to help you!
