Day 4 activity 1 - The waiata - A song in your heart SLJ

Kia ora and welcome back to my blog!

This activity is about my favourite maori waiata that you found on google search. I didn't really need to google some waiata's because I know heaps. There are 2 waiata's that I like which are "Tiaho mai ra" and "Ka pioioi".

Image result for maori

Why do I like these 2 songs? Well, because in Kiko you can use poi's and I LOVE using poi's and in Tiaho mai ra, the song is about aroha.

Here are the lyrics to Ka pioioi:

Ka pioioi1 e
Tohu aroha haukāinga

E hoki mai rā
Kia kite atu i tō iwi e.
E rotarota2 ana
E katakata ana mai rā.

Pūkana3 whetero4 mai
I te ihi5 ā ō mātua.6

Kia kite atu ano
I tō ataahua ai kanapa7
Pupuhi ai e te hau8
Kapohia āku roimata.

Ka pioioi he
tohu aroha haukāinga

Here are the lyrics to Tiaho mai ra:

Tiaho mai rā
Te whetu o te ata
Kopu i te ao,
Pareārau i te pō
Ka tu te ao marama
he ao hara
Tu mai rā koe hei tohu i ahau,
Tu mai rā koe hei tohu i ahau,
E kore te aroha,
E kaupare noa
Hoki mai rā ki ahau, e te tau.
Hoki mai rā ki ahau, e te tau.

Tiaho mai rā
Te whetu o te ata
Kopu i te ao,
Pareārau i te pō
Ka tu he o marama
he ahara
Tu mai rā koe hei tohu i ahau,
Tu mai rā koe hei tohu i ahau

Thanks for reading and more blog posts will be coming so stay tuned!

Ka kite ano...

  1. Hi Cerenity,

Ruby here from the Summer Learning Journey team.

Good work with this activity. It's great that you didn't need to Google any waiatas because you already knew some! Good job!

Can you tell us some more about what Ka Pioioi is about? It's great that you've given us the lyrics but what is the message in the song. And I wonder what the tune is like. Perhaps you could put a link to the song so that we could all listen to it.

Do you enjoy singing? I enjoy singing very much. Too much if you ask my family! They're always complaining that I sing too often.

I look forward to reading more of your blog over the summer.
    Cheers,
    Ruby.
